![]() The findings help build understanding of how emerging adults perceive elements of nature as resources for wellbeing and can inform the development of nature-oriented interventions. Four elements of nature facilitated these pathways: domesticated fauna, domesticated flora, wild fauna and wild surrounding nature. Thematic analysis revealed four distinct perceived pathways connecting nature to wellbeing, including symbiotic nurturing, building social glue, maintaining a positive outlook, and centreing yourself. It is the results of these 14 interviews that are discussed in this paper with a focus on (i) the elements of nature which these emerging adults identify as important resources for their wellbeing, (ii) experiences and the perceived pathways between these elements of nature and wellbeing. Without a priori mention, 14 participants identified contact with various elements of nature as important resources in supporting their wellbeing. Data were collected using photo-elicitation interviews, where 18 emerging adults took photographs that represented their views on and experiences of wellbeing, and during the follow-up interviews discussed the meaning of their photographs. This paper addresses this gap by providing unique insights into how emerging adults perceive and experience nature as a beneficial resource for their wellbeing. Research that examines lived experience and how emerging adults seek to create wellbeing in their daily lives through nature is limited. With this work, we aim to provide actionable guidance for researchers and IT practitioners to understand and design technologies that foster sustained wellbeing. The paper illustrates how the framework was developed and elaborates three major areas of application: (design) research, design strategies and measurement approaches. ![]() We outline (a) the framework, (b) its five main stages including their multidisciplinary theoretical foundations, (c) relations between these stages and (d) specific elements that further describe each stage. The framework was developed following a bottom-up–top-down approach by integrating theoretical knowledge from positive psychology, behavioral science and human–computer interaction (HCI)/design with empirical insights. Intentional wellbeing-enhancing activities form the centerpiece linking direct product interaction to, ultimately, wellbeing. In this paper, we introduce a framework that conceptualizes a multi-stage process through which technology can promote sustained wellbeing. Follow-up analyses shed new insights into people’s predictions about their own and others’ happiness and their actual happiness when spending money for themselves or others. However, we report an additional analysis, focused on a more direct measure of happiness, that does show a significant effect in the direction of the original. Although the original study (N = 46) found that the latter group was happier, when we used the same analysis in our replication (N = 133), we did not observe a significant difference. Participants were given money and randomly assigned to either spend it on themselves or on someone else. We conducted a close replication of a key experiment from Dunn, Aknin, and Norton (2008) to verify and expand upon their findings. It is therefore both surprising and important that people can be even happier after spending money on someone else. ![]() Spending money on one’s self, whether to solve a problem, fulfill a need, or increase enjoyment, often heightens one’s sense of happiness.
